Chapter 14

Our early Sunday morning return made it easy for Nanna to scoop me and Rasheeda up for church. I couldn’t beg off like I wanted to. Nanna guilt tripped me by saying God never tired of watching over us, so we should fight our fatigue and give God our time.

I wanted to protest, but I didn’t want to disappoint her. So here I was sitting up in church trying not to doze off on the front pew. Pastor Johnson’s booming voice startled me, “Your sins will surely find you out!”

My heart pounded in my chest. Was he talking to me? I looked over to see Rasheeda’s wary eyes focused on Pastor Johnson. He walked and stood in front of our pew.

“When God gets tired, oh you best believe the whipping He’s about to do is gone tear your butt up. You can’t run from Him. You can’t hide from Him. Do you hear me church? Lies you tell the people that love you will be exposed. Doing things in the dark will be exposed.”

I was legit scared. By the end of the sermon, me and Rasheeda were at the altar repeating the prayer of salvation with a few more people. Pastor Johnson whispered to both of us before we turned to go back to our seats, “Daughters, whatever you are caught up in, you have to quit it cold turkey. You have to do it today.” We immediately agreed. God must’ve told Pastor Johnson our business.

Nanna praised us on the drive home. She said her babies made her so happy. I was happy to make her happy.

My plan was to text Walt-D tonight and let him know that I wasn’t doing another job. My money was looking good. I had close to fifteen thousand under my mattress. I kept at least five hundred in my purse to shop with. My parents’ bills were mysteriously getting paid. My mom figured my dad had come off some money she assumed didn’t go to his fictious girlfriend. Either way, things were looking up financially in our house.

A text came through from Monie hours later. She sent an invite to a house party. I was through with her. I deleted the text and continued to watch a re-run of The Parkers. My phone buzzed again. It was Walt-D with a job for tomorrow night. I texted back that I was unavailable. Instead of texting back, he called.

“Whatchu mean you unavailable,” He growled in the phone.

“The block is hot,” I said, using the code reference we came up with to say that our parents had us hemmed up.

“Oh, word?”

“Yeah,” I said dryly.

He lowered his voice. “Can I see you tonight?”

Fool, didn’t I just say the block is hot? “Not tonight.”

Not ever again.

He tried to mack me. “I need to see you soon, baby. I miss you.”

I silently laughed at Kim Parker’s antics on tv.

“BB, you heard me?” His overgrown butt was begging like Keith Sweat on the phone.

“Yeah, I miss you too,” I placated him.
